Scheduling Your Written Permit Test: Plan Ahead
Please note: You must be at least 15½ to take the "written" permit knowledge test with the DMV. You may take the test in person at a DMV office or online using the DMV website, if you are eligible. Please note: even if you take the permit knowledge test online, you will still need to physically go into a DMV office to complete the application process and earn your permit.
Also worth noting: The DMV is closed on weekends. Tests are only conducted on weekdays, whether you take the test online or in-person at a DMV office.
Schedule an Appointment at the DMV
We strongly encourage you to schedule your appointment at the DMV well in advance as you may find it difficult to find an appointment on your desired date. Keep in mind: Even if you take the permit knowledge test online, you still need to go into the DMV to complete the application process and earn your permit.

What to Bring to the DMV on the Day of Your Permit Test
You will need the following when you go to the DMV to apply for your permit:
- DMV Form DL-400C (Pink Certificate) - We will mail this to you after you complete our drivers ed course.
- DMV Driver License and Identification Card (ID) Application - This electronic application can be completed online before visiting a DMV field office or by using the touch screen terminals at the DMV office. Applicants under the age of 18 must have their applications signed by their parent(s) or legal guardian(s). If both parents/guardians have joint custody, both must sign. The electronic driver license application provides a section for parents to complete. More information on the electronic application is available at eDLapp.dmv.ca.gov.
- An official birth certificate (original or certified copy)
- Proof of California Residency - Parents must provide two (2) acceptable residency documents with current address (learn more about what documents establish California Residency here)
- Social Security Number
- Application fee (about $45)
- *If you elected to take the permit knowledge test online: Bring confirmation of the permit test being passed.
